And we’re back! Here’s the latest playlist of the week as well as a review of Flo Milli’s debut album!
The Glorious Debut of Flo Milli
Alabama-based newcomer Flo Milli is officially the latest it girl of the year. This past weekend the 20 year old rapstress dropped her debut mixtape, Ho, Why Is You Here? to much fanfare, propelling her name into the spotlight alongside Taylor Swift. Like many a Gen-Z musician these days, Milli first garnered notice on TikTok with her viral 2019 singles “Beef FloMix” and “In The Party”. Since then, the boisterous young’n signed to RCA Records and has been consistently dropping punchy but playful singles including “Not Friendly” and “Eat It Up” earlier this year.
With Ho, Why Is You Here? Milli certifies that her name can join the roster of newly cemented female rap superstars that have hailed from the South as of late, including City Girls and Megan Thee Stallion. Clocking in at thirty minutes total, the album itself is quite obviously the work of a super TikToker, perfect for today’s world of quick streaming and short attention spans. Despite its brevity, though, from start to finish the album is a quick sprint bursting with flavor and attitude. One Twitter user said it best: "Flo Milli make pretty girl fight music. like... let me apply this lip gloss ‘fore I whoop that ass!"
In addition to the swag-laden “Beef FloMix” and the schoolgirl sass of “In The Party”, stand out new tracks include “Weak”, where Milli brilliantly samples the sweet love song that is SWV’s “Weak” but turns it into her own brassy diss track aimed at awful men, and “May I” which is inspired by Snoop Dogg’s ‘94 “Gin and Juice” and has a body-thumping timebomb-ticking beat that courses through your veins. My personal favorite is the hypnotic “Pussycat Doll”, where Milli’s flow is simply insatiable, and in which she declares: “I'm the H.B.I.C, she know I'm hot because she not/They can't keep up with me (No)/But deep inside, they want my spot (Want my spot)”. A brag which soon enough, Flo Milli will surely have no problem backing up. Check out some highlight tracks/videos above and below!
